Three Winters, Director: Michael Koch, Switzerland, Germany, 2022, 136 min., German language, Lithuanian subtitles

In this film, which received an honourable mention at the Berlinale, director Michael Koch takes the story of a self-sacrificing love affair to dizzying metaphysical heights. Anna, who is popular in the remote Alpine village, raises her young daughter alone. Marco, on the other hand, is not a local; he comes from the lowlands to help the farmers with their hard seasonal labour. She is like a fast and refreshing mountain stream, and he is calm, quiet and powerful like his gently loved bulls. Their relationship is not accepted by everyone, but Anna feels secure with Marco, and the wedding is not long in coming. But the young and happy family spring is replaced by a difficult autumn. Marco is plagued by severe headaches and finds it increasingly difficult to control his impulses. “Three Winters” is a story imbued with the spirit of ancient Greek tragedies about the eternal connection between man and nature and the love that conquers death.
