Romanticism paintings were characterised by the contemplation of wild or “majestic” landscapes, and the land itself became a powerful symbol of the German nationalist body. Anselm Kiefer invites a dialogue, but at the same time takes a radically critical stance towards German history and cultural tradition. His sombre paintings and sculptures of epic scale explore myth, memory, German culture and the aftermath of the Second World War. In his latest documentary film, director Wim Wenders takes a close look at the artist’s life and work. He interweaves past and present to show what inspires Kiefer and to better understand the creative process that shaped his visionary work.
