ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
In the month of July Nida traditionally lives to the rhythm of the Thomas Mann Festival organised by the Thomas Mann Cultural Centre and the Thomas Mann Memorial Museum.  Already the first festival that took place in 1997 highlighted a unique hallmark of the festival purporting to reveal the inner world of a modern man through music, word and image, versatility of a personality of Thomas Mann chosen as key dimension.

The selection of the venue and timing of the festival had been triggered by the first visit of the author Thomas Mann, a Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature, in Nida which took place on July 16, 1930. The idea of the festival was put forward by the International Curatorium of the Thomas Mann Cultural Centre inspired by the legacy of the great humanist and cosmopolitan writer Thomas Mann, which has shaped all the programmes and themes of the festival since its inception. The themes of the 1st through 7th editions of the festival were related to Thomas Mann and his work, the eighth and ninth editions of the festival focused on the enlargement of the European Union and responsibility of an artist, the tenth through the twelfth festivals addressed the issues of the Baltic region cultural landscape by focusing on the important cultural centres Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn, and the cities with a complex past – Klaipėda, Königsberg, and Danzig. The thirteenth festival, designated as “The Wells of the Past”, was dedicated to the millennium of Lithuania, while the fourteenth festival, “The Spiritual Aristocracy”, highlighted the role and responsibility of intellectuals in modern society. The fifteenth through sixteenth editions of the festival were dedicated to the ideas and problems brought forth in the writings of Czesław Miłosz that hold a lasting relevance to the European continent.

The format of the festival had been established from the very start encompassing evenings of chamber music, the verbal programme including presentations, discussions and debates, the arts programme and cinema nights featuring top level guests of Lithuanian, European and world-wide renown. Concerts of classical music are given a prominent place in the framework of the festival which boasts its own tradition as well:   performance of a piece specially written for each festival by a Lithuanian composer, one concert dedicated to presentation of the work of Lithuanian composers, debuts, recitals, pieces of lesser-known or rarely-performed composers.

The state-of-the-art festival annually attracts hosts of international public to Nida. The festival has its own aficionados who have been specially timing their vacations to be able to come to the festival for the last two decade. The Thomas Mann cultural institution represents a venue for open discussions and friendly meetings promoting intercultural dialogue and tolerance.
